Salmon fishing in Alaska has been on our bucket list for years—and on our RV adventure through Alaska, we finally checked it off!
We leave Anchorage and head to the Kasilof River on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula, where we’re determined to catch wild sockeye salmon and fill the freezer in our RV.
Our home base is Scenic View RV Park, where we’re treated to an incredible view of the Cook Inlet. Unfortunately, the weather isn’t exactly cooperating… it’s rainy, and Nancy is battling a pretty nasty cold.
But this is Alaska—and we’re not letting a little rain stop us! We hired a local fishing guide who supplied all of our equipment and took us upriver to one of his favorite sockeye fishing spots. That’s where we learned about the unusual technique known as “flossing”—a unique method used to catch spawning sockeye salmon.
After 9 hours on the river, we ended up catching 10 wild sockeye salmon and filled our RV freezer!
But the adventure doesn’t end at the river. We’ll also show you how we cleaned, packaged and preserved our salmon for our RV freezer, followed by our favorite way to cook our Alaska sockeye once we got back to the RV.
